Treatment and prophylaxis of influenza A virus infections in adults and children; also used for Parkinson's disease symptoms and extrapyramidal reactions caused by certain medications.
Acts as an antiviral agent by blocking the M2 protein channel of influenza A virus, preventing viral uncoating and replication. In Parkinson's disease, it increases dopamine release and inhibits dopamine reuptake in the brain.
Should be initiated within 24-48 hours of symptom onset for influenza. Use with caution in patients with seizure disorders, renal impairment, or history of heart failure. Common side effects include dizziness, insomnia, nausea, and orthostatic hypotension. Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent worsening of symptoms.
