Ambenonium
Ambenonium is a cholinesterase inhibitor used primarily to treat myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. By inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, it increases acetylcholine levels at neuromuscular junctions, thereby improving muscle strength and function. This medication is typically considered when patients do not respond adequately to first-line treatments.
Ambenonium is a cholinesterase inhibitor used to manage muscle weakness in myasthenia gravis patients.

Ambenonium is primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis, a condition causing fluctuating muscle weakness and fatigue. It may also be used in cases where patients have an inadequate response to neostigmine or pyridostigmine.
Ambenonium works by reversibly inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down acetylcholine. This action increases the concentration of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions, allowing for enhanced nerve signal transmission to muscles and improved contractility.
Like other cholinesterase inhibitors, ambenonium may cause side effects related to cholinergic excess, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, and bradycardia. It should be used with caution in patients with asthma, urinary obstruction, or cardiac arrhythmias. Dosing must be individualized, and abrupt discontinuation should be avoided as it may precipitate myasthenic crisis.
