Amdinocillin Pivoxil / Pivampicillin
Amdinocillin Pivoxil (also known as Pivampicillin) is an oral prodrug antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class. It works by converting to its active form, amdinocillin (mecillinam), in the body, which targets bacterial cell wall synthesis. This medication is primarily used to treat urinary tract infections and certain gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria.

Treatment of urinary tract infections and gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli. May also be used for other infections where susceptible bacteria are identified.
Amdinocillin Pivoxil is a pivaloyl ester prodrug that is hydrolyzed in the intestinal mucosa to release the active drug amdinocillin. The active form binds preferentially to penicillin-binding protein 2 (PBP2), inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and causing cell death.
This is an oral antibiotic formulation of amdinocillin designed to improve absorption compared to the parent compound. Like all beta-lactams, it is generally well-tolerated but should be used only when bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to minimize resistance development. Patients with penicillin allergy should avoid this medication.
