Amiloride / Bendroflumethiazide

Published: July 27, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

Amiloride/Bendroflumethiazide is a combination diuretic medication used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema). The thiazide component (bendroflumethiazide) helps remove excess fluid and sodium, while the potassium-sparing component (amiloride) helps prevent potassium loss, making this combination useful when balancing fluid removal with electrolyte preservation.

Quick summary

A combination diuretic used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention, designed to maximize fluid removal while preserving potassium levels.

Treatment of essential hypertension and management of edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal dysfunction. Often prescribed when single-diuretic therapy is insufficient for blood pressure or fluid control.

Bendroflumethiazide inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, promoting urinary sodium and water excretion. Amiloride blocks sodium channels in the collecting duct, preventing potassium excretion and counteracting the potassium-depleting effects of the thiazide diuretic.

Monitor for hyperkalemia (high potassium), especially in patients with kidney problems or those taking other potassium-affecting medications. Avoid potassium supplements and salt substitutes containing potassium unless specifically directed. May cause dizziness; rise slowly from sitting or lying positions. Regular electrolyte monitoring is recommended during treatment.
