Amiloride / Cyclopenthiazide

Published: July 27, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

Amiloride/Cyclopenthiazide is a combination diuretic medication used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema). Cyclopenthiazide helps remove excess fluid and sodium from the body, while amiloride prevents potassium loss, making this combination particularly useful when potassium conservation is important. This medication is typically prescribed when single-agent diuretic therapy is insufficient.

Quick summary

A combination diuretic that removes excess fluid while preserving potassium levels, used for hypertension and edema.

Treatment of essential hypertension and management of edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disorders. Particularly useful when potassium conservation is desirable alongside fluid removal.

Cyclopenthiazide inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, promoting water and sodium excretion. Amiloride blocks sodium channels in the collecting duct, reducing potassium secretion and providing a potassium-sparing effect that counteracts thiazide-induced hypokalemia.

Regular monitoring of electrolytes (especially potassium) and kidney function is essential. Contraindicated in hyperkalemia, severe renal impairment, and concurrent use with other potassium-sparing agents. May cause dizziness; avoid alcohol. Not recommended during pregnancy without careful benefit-risk assessment.
