Fluorouracil
Aminolevulinic Acid Hydrochloride is a topical photosensitizing agent used in photodynamic therapy to treat precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratoses), certain skin cancers, and acne. When applied to the skin and activated by a specific wavelength of light, it generates reactive oxygen species that selectively destroy abnormal cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

Primarily used for treating actinic keratoses (precancerous skin lesions), basal cell carcinoma, and acne vulgaris. May also be used for photorejuvenation and other dermatologic conditions involving abnormal or rapidly dividing skin cells.
As a prodrug, it is metabolized within cells to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), a photosensitive compound that accumulates preferentially in abnormal cells. When exposed to appropriate light wavelengths (typically blue or red light), PpIX absorbs the light energy and generates reactive oxygen species, causing localized cellular destruction.
Applied topically by healthcare professionals; patients must avoid sunlight and bright indoor light for 24-48 hours after application due to photosensitivity risk. Side effects may include erythema, burning sensation, and temporary skin discoloration at the treatment site. Contraindicated in patients with porphyria or known photosensitivity disorders. Only trained healthcare providers should administer this therapy.
