Treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. May also be used for bronchial spasm and respiratory conditions associated with excessive mucus production.

Aminophylline relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by inhibiting phosphodiesterase and antagonizing adenosine receptors. Ephedrine stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors to cause bronchodilation and reduces nasal congestion. Potassium iodide acts as an expectorant, thinning respiratory secretions to facilitate their removal through coughing.

May cause increased heart rate, anxiety, insomnia, or gastrointestinal upset. Contraindicated in patients with cardiovascular disorders, hyperthyroidism, or sensitivity to any component. Requires careful monitoring of blood levels for aminophylline due to narrow therapeutic window. Drug interactions with many medications including beta-blockers, cimetidine, and certain antibiotics.
