Treatment of respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract infections, meningitis, bacterial meningitis, gastrointestinal infections (salmonella, shigella), biliary tract infections, and infections caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for cell wall cross-linking. This weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death, particularly in actively growing bacteria.
Patients with penicillin allergy should not use ampicillin. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and rash. Full course must be completed as prescribed. May interact with oral contraceptives and blood thinners. Not effective against viral infections.
