Treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, including iron deficiency resulting from pregnancy, poor dietary intake, blood loss, or conditions impairing iron absorption. May also be used when iron requirements are increased.
Ferrous fumarate provides elemental iron to support red blood cell production and hemoglobin synthesis. Ascorbic acid enhances iron absorption in the gastrointestinal tract by keeping iron in its more absorbable ferrous form. Docusate acts as a stool softener to counteract the constipating effects of iron supplements.
Iron supplements may cause dark stools, stomach upset, or constipation/diarrhea. Take with food if stomach upset occurs, but avoid taking with calcium, antacids, or dairy products as these can reduce absorption. Keep out of reach of children as iron overdose can be dangerous. May interact with certain antibiotics and other medications; spacing doses is recommended.
