Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children weighing at least 35 kg, used in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
Atazanavir inhibits HIV-1 protease, an enzyme needed for viral replication. Cobicistat inhibits CYP3A enzymes to boost atazanavir blood levels, allowing once-daily dosing.
Should be taken with food for optimal absorption. Monitor liver function and bilirubin levels as atazanavir can cause jaundice. Drug interactions are common due to CYP3A inhibition. Cannot be used with certain other antiretrovirals or medications metabolized by CYP3A. Always use with other antiretrovirals; not for monotherapy.
