Treatment of hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and triglycerides), primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular risk reduction in patients with or without established cardiovascular disease. May also be used in pediatric patients in certain cases.
Atorvastatin works by selectively and competitively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. By reducing intracellular cholesterol production, the liver increases uptake of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, thereby lowering circulating lipid levels.
Should be used with caution in patients with liver disease or a history of muscle disorders. May cause side effects including myopathy and elevated liver enzymes. Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Regular monitoring of lipid panels and liver function is recommended during treatment.
