Treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), peptic ulcers, gastritis, and other functional gastrointestinal disorders characterized by excessive cramping, spasms, and abdominal pain. May also be used for urinary tract spasms.
The anticholinergic components (atropine, hyoscyamine, scopolamine) block acetylcholine receptors in smooth muscle, reducing intestinal motility and secretions. Phenobarbital provides central nervous system sedation, which helps reduce anxiety and discomfort associated with GI spasms.
May cause drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation. Use with caution in elderly patients and those with glaucoma, urinary retention, or heart conditions. Avoid alcohol and operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Should not be discontinued abruptly after prolonged use.
