Treatment of diarrhea and gastrointestinal cramping; may be used for symptomatic relief in acute and chronic diarrhea conditions.
Atropine blocks acetylcholine receptors to reduce intestinal smooth muscle spasms; kaolin adsorbs bacteria and toxins in the GI tract; phenobarbital provides sedative and anxiolytic effects to reduce discomfort and anxiety associated with gastrointestinal symptoms.
May cause drowsiness, dry mouth, and blurred vision. Phenobarbital carries risk of dependence with prolonged use. Use with caution in elderly, pregnant women, and patients with liver disease. Generally not recommended for pediatric patients. Has been largely superseded by safer alternatives in modern practice.
