Avelox is used to treat respiratory infections such as pneumonia and acute bronchitis, skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, and sometimes sinusitis. It is effective against a broad range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as atypical pathogens.

Avelox belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It works by inhibiting two key bacterial enzymes—DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV—which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. By disrupting these processes, the medication prevents bacteria from multiplying and spreading.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache. Fluoroquinolones like Avelox may increase the risk of tendinitis, tendon rupture, and peripheral neuropathy. They should not be used as a first-line treatment for uncomplicated infections. Patients should inform their doctor of any history of seizures, heart conditions, or tendon problems before use.
