Azilsartan/chlorthalidone is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in patients who require multiple agents to achieve adequate blood pressure control. It is not recommended as initial therapy and is typically used as a second-line option when monotherapy is insufficient.
Azilsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by preventing the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes vasoconstriction. Chlorthalidone is a thiazide-like diuretic that helps the kidneys eliminate excess sodium and water from the body, reducing fluid volume and further decreasing blood pressure.
This medication may cause dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when starting treatment or increasing dose. Patients should avoid alcohol and stay hydrated. Regular monitoring of kidney function, electrolytes, and blood pressure is important during treatment. Not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters.
