Treats respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain ear, nose, and throat infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
As a prodrug of ampicillin, it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by preventing cross-linking of peptidoglycan, leading to bacterial cell death.
Should not be used by patients with penicillin allergy. Common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and diarrhea. May reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve.
