Overdose information

Important overdose information
Toxic dose: Single dose that may cause serious toxicity or death in adults; doses as low as 200-500 mg can cause significant toxicity in sensitive individuals
Chronic overdose: Prolonged exposure to lower concentrations may lead to cumulative toxicity affecting cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems
Immediate actions
Activated charcoal administration if within 1 hour of ingestion; gastric lavage for recent large ingestions; intravenous sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate to precipitate barium as insoluble barium sulfate; correct hypokalemia with careful potassium replacement
Antidote
No specific antidote exists; treatment is supportive and symptomatic(Supportive care is essential; early intervention with barium-precipitating agents (sodium sulfate) and electrolyte correction can be life-saving)

Industrial applications

Specialized radiographic imaging studies requiring contrast enhancement, particularly in research and specialized diagnostic applications involving the gastrointestinal system.

Provides radiopacity due to barium's high atomic number, which absorbs X-rays and creates contrast against soft tissues during imaging procedures.

This is a laboratory chemical with specific handling requirements. Soluble barium compounds are toxic if ingested. Must be prepared and administered only by qualified personnel in appropriate medical or research settings. Not to be confused with barium sulfate, which is the standard oral contrast agent for routine GI studies.
