Treatment of severe diarrhea, including functional GI disorders with diarrhea, and associated abdominal cramping and pain. May also be used for symptomatic relief of bladder spasms.

Belladonna alkaloids (atropine, scopolamine) block acetylcholine receptors in smooth muscle, reducing spasms and secretions. Opium alkaloids (morphine, codeine) act on opioid receptors in the gut, slowing intestinal motility and reducing diarrhea.

Contains controlled substances; use carries risk of dependence with prolonged use. Anticholinergic effects include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and urinary retention. May cause drowsiness; avoid alcohol and operating machinery. Contraindicated in glaucoma, urinary obstruction, and severe hepatic disease. Use cautiously in elderly patients due to anticholinergic effects. Not recommended for long-term use.
