Treatment of peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colitis, and other gastrointestinal conditions involving smooth muscle spasms. May also be used for renal or biliary colic.
Belladonna alkaloids block acetylcholine receptors in the GI tract smooth muscle, reducing spasms and secretions. Phenobarbital, a barbiturate, provides sedative effects to calm anxiety that may worsen symptoms.
Common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, constipation, and blurred vision. Avoid alcohol and activities requiring alertness. Contraindicated in glaucoma, urinary obstruction, and myasthenia gravis. Use cautiously in elderly patients due to increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects. May cause dependence with prolonged use.
