Benazeprilat

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

Benazeprilat is an active metabolite of the prodrug benazepril, belonging to the ACE inhibitor class of medications. It works by blocking the angiotensin-converting enzyme, which reduces the production of angiotensin II, a substance that causes blood vessels to narrow. This leads to relaxation and widening of blood vessels, resulting in lowered blood pressure.

Quick summary

Benazeprilat is an ACE inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels through blocking angiotensin-converting enzyme.

Benazeprilat is primarily used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It may also be used in certain heart failure cases or to protect kidney function in patients with diabetes.

Benazeprilat inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), preventing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II. This reduces vasoconstriction and decreases aldosterone secretion, leading to lower blood pressure and reduced cardiac workload.

ACE inhibitors can cause cough, hyperkalemia, and angioedema. Contraindicated in pregnancy. Should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment or those taking potassium-sparing diuretics. Requires regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels.
