This medication is primarily indicated for hypertension (high blood pressure) and may also be used for edema associated with heart failure or other conditions. The combination approach is particularly useful when monotherapy fails to adequately control blood pressure.

Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic that promotes sodium and water excretion by acting on the distal convoluted tubules in the kidneys, reducing blood volume. Rauwolfia contains reserpine, which depletes catecholamine stores in nerve endings, decreasing sympathetic nervous system activity and further reducing blood pressure through vasodilation and decreased heart rate.

Common side effects may include drowsiness, fatigue, and depression (particularly from the Rauwolfia component). The medication may cause electrolyte disturbances, especially low potassium levels. It should not be discontinued abruptly, and patients should have regular monitoring of blood pressure and electrolytes. This is an older medication class with fewer modern alternatives available today.
