Benlysta is approved for treating active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in adults and children, as well as active lupus nephritis (kidney inflammation caused by lupus). It is generally prescribed for patients with moderate to severe disease who have not responded adequately to standard treatments.

Benlysta is a monoclonal antibody that targets and blocks a protein called B-lymphocyte stimulator (BLyS). By inhibiting BLyS, the medication reduces the survival and activity of abnormal B cells, which are overactive in lupus and contribute to inflammation and tissue damage.

Benlysta is administered by healthcare professionals and requires monitoring for infections during treatment. It may increase the risk of serious infections, infusion reactions, and has not been studied in patients with severe active lupus involving the central nervous system. Patients should be up to date with vaccinations before starting treatment.
