Benralizumab

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Benralizumab is a monoclonal antibody therapy used as add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma in patients aged 6 years and older. It works by binding to the interleukin-5 receptor on eosinophils, leading to their depletion and reducing airway inflammation.

Quick summary

Method of delivery

Severe eosinophilic asthma as add-on maintenance therapy for patients 6 years and older who are inadequately controlled on high-dose inhaled corticosteroids plus long-acting beta-agonists

Binds with high affinity to the alpha subunit of the interleukin-5 receptor (IL-5Rα) expressed on eosinophils and basophils, triggering antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity that rapidly depletes circulating eosinophils, reducing airway inflammation

Administered subcutaneously every 4 weeks for first 3 doses, then every 8 weeks. Not for acute exacerbations. Monitor for hypersensitivity reactions and parasitic infections. Eosinophil depletion may affect response to certain infections.
