Benzac is primarily used to treat acne vulgaris (common acne), including inflammatory acne with papules and pustules, as well as non-inflammatory comedonal acne with blackheads and whiteheads. It may also be used for other skin conditions as determined by a healthcare provider.

Benzoyl peroxide works through multiple mechanisms: it releases oxygen that kills acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes), has mild keratolytic properties that help shed dead skin cells and unclog pores, and may reduce oil production in the skin. These combined effects help clear existing acne and prevent new breakouts.

Benzac may cause skin dryness, redness, peeling, or irritation, especially when first starting treatment. It can bleach hair and fabrics. Start with lower concentrations and gradually increase as tolerated. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Sun exposure may increase irritation; use sunscreen and protective clothing. Consult a doctor before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other acne medications.
