Used to produce temporary numbness of the skin or mucous membranes before minor surgical or diagnostic procedures such as needle insertions, laceration repairs, skin biopsies, or endoscopic examinations. May also be used for temporary relief of pain from minor burns, insect bites, or sunburns.

Both benzocaine and tetracaine are local anesthetics that work by blocking nerve signal transmission in the applied area. They inhibit the flow of sodium ions through nerve cell membranes, preventing the generation and conduction of nerve impulses that produce sensations of pain.

For topical use only—do not apply to open wounds, eyes, or internally unless specifically directed by a physician. Use lowest effective amount to avoid systemic absorption. Rare but serious methemoglobinemia has been reported with benzocaine products. Discontinue use and seek medical attention if signs of allergic reaction, excessive irritation, or unusual symptoms occur. Not recommended for use in infants or young children without close medical supervision.
