Treatment of advanced or metastatic prostate cancer, often used in combination with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogs. May also be used as part of combined androgen blockade or in patients who have not responded to other treatments.
Bicalutamide competitively binds to androgen receptors in target tissues, blocking the binding of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By preventing androgens from activating these receptors, it inhibits androgen-dependent prostate cancer cell growth.
Should be taken as prescribed, usually once daily. Common side effects include hot flashes, breast tenderness, gastrointestinal disturbances, and decreased libido. May cause liver abnormalities; regular monitoring may be required. Contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant due to potential harm to a male fetus.
