Treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-naive adults and children (weighing at least 14 kg), as well as virologically suppressed patients switching from a stable antiretroviral regimen. Not indicated for HIV-2 or HBV infection.

This combination targets HIV at multiple stages: bictegravir inhibits the integrase enzyme, preventing viral DNA integration into host cells; emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide are nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors that block the conversion of viral RNA into DNA, reducing viral replication.

Should not be used in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment. May cause immune reconstitution syndrome, lactic acidosis, and hepatomegaly. Discontinuation may result in HBV exacerbation in co-infected patients. Resistance testing is recommended before initiating therapy.
