Binosto is indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men to prevent fractures. It is also approved for the treatment of osteoporosis due to use of corticosteroid medications in men and women, as well as for Paget's disease of bone in some patients.

Binosto belongs to the bisphosphonate class of medications. It works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, the process by which bone is broken down. By slowing bone loss, the medication helps maintain bone density and reduces the risk of fractures.

Binosto should be taken once weekly on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, after dissolving the tablet in plain water. Patients must remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication and should not eat, drink, or take other medications during this time. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms, and rare but serious risks include osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures. Calcium and vitamin D supplementation is often recommended during treatment.
