Bio-Statin treats infections caused by Candida species, including oral thrush (oropharyngeal candidiasis), esophageal candidiasis, intestinal candidiasis, and cutaneous fungal infections of the skin.
Nystatin, the active ingredient in Bio-Statin, works by binding to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, creating pores that disrupt cell integrity and cause fungal cell death.
Bio-Statin may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea or diarrhea. It is typically not absorbed systemically, making it generally well-tolerated. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed even if symptoms improve. Patients with known hypersensitivity to nystatin should not use this medication.
