Treatment of Parkinson's disease, drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) caused by antipsychotics or other dopamine-blocking agents, and akathisia. May also be used for tremor and dystonia associated with other neurological conditions.
Biperiden is a muscarinic receptor antagonist that blocks acetylcholine activity in the central nervous system. By reducing excessive cholinergic activity relative to dopamine, it helps restore neurotransmitter balance and improves motor symptoms in conditions involving dopaminergic-cholinergic imbalance.
Use with caution in elderly patients due to increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects. Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention. May cause drowsiness or dizziness; avoid operating machinery until effects are known. Contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma, GI obstruction, and urinary retention. May interact with other anticholinergic medications, increasing side effect risk.
