Biperiden is used to treat Parkinson's disease symptoms including tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia, as well as extrapyramidal side effects (dystonia, akathisia, parkinsonism) caused by antipsychotic or other dopamine-blocking medications.
As an anticholinergic, biperiden blocks acetylcholine receptors in the brain, helping to restore the balance between dopamine and acetylcholine neurotransmitters. This reduces the overactivity of cholinergic signaling that contributes to movement disorders and Parkinsonism.
Use with caution in patients with glaucoma, urinary retention, or gastrointestinal obstruction. May cause dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and cognitive effects. Should not be stopped abruptly. Effectiveness may decrease with long-term use. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking this medication.
