Treats acute and traveler's diarrhea in adults by reducing the frequency and improving the consistency of bowel movements. May also be used for mild digestive upset and stomach discomfort associated with diarrhea.
Kaolin (a clay mineral) and pectin (a soluble fiber) absorb excess water, toxins, and bacteria in the intestines, adding bulk to stool. Bismuth subcarbonate provides a protective coating on the gut lining and has mild antimicrobial properties that help reduce intestinal inflammation.
May cause harmless darkening of stool or tongue. Should not be used for more than 2 days without medical supervision. May reduce absorption of other oral medications; take other drugs at least 2 hours apart. Not recommended for patients with severe kidney impairment. Avoid use in children recovering from viral infections due to theoretical concerns with salicylate-containing compounds.
