Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection and associated duodenal ulcers. It is typically used when H. pylori has been confirmed through testing in patients with active ulcers or a history of ulcer disease.
Each component has a different antibacterial mechanism: bismuth subcitrate coats and protects the stomach lining while having antimicrobial properties; metronidazole interferes with bacterial DNA synthesis; tetracycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. Together, they provide synergistic effects against H. pylori.
Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed; do not share this medication with others. Avoid antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum near the time of taking tetracycline as they can reduce absorption. Tetracycline can cause photosensitivity and permanent tooth discoloration in children. Metronidazole may cause a metallic taste. Avoid alcohol during treatment. May interact with blood thinners and other medications—inform your doctor of all current medications.
