Treatment of symptomatic botulism caused by Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin type A in adult and pediatric patients. May be used for foodborne, wound, or infant botulism when Type A toxin is confirmed or suspected.
Equine-derived F(ab')2 fragments bind with high affinity to botulinum neurotoxin type A, forming immune complexes that neutralize the toxin's activity. This prevents the toxin from binding to presynaptic nerve terminals and blocking acetylcholine release, thereby stopping the progression of paralysis.
Derived from horse serum, carrying risk of hypersensitivity and serum sickness reactions; skin testing may be required before administration. Does not reverse existing paralysis but prevents further toxin binding. Early treatment improves outcomes. May not be effective against other botulinum toxin types. Should be administered under medical supervision with emergency resources available.
