Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 25, 2026

Botulinum Neurotoxin D Immune Fab2, Equine is an antitoxin product containing F(ab')2 immunoglobulin fragments derived from equine (horse) serum. It is used for the treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis of botulism poisoning caused by Clostridium botulinum type D neurotoxin. Treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis of foodborne, wound, or inhalational botulism caused by botulinum neurotoxin type D. Typically administered when botulism is suspected based on clinical presentation or known exposure.

Equine F(ab')2 immunoglobulin fragments bind specifically to botulinum neurotoxin type D, neutralizing its activity and preventing the toxin from binding to presynaptic nerve terminals. This blocks the inhibition of acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, thereby preventing the descending flaccid paralysis characteristic of botulism.

As an equine-derived product, there is a risk of hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, particularly in patients with prior exposure to equine proteins. Skin testing may be recommended before administration. F(ab')2 fragments have lower immunogenicity than whole antibodies but serum sickness remains possible. Should be administered as early as possible after toxin exposure for optimal efficacy.
