Treatment of suspected or confirmed botulism caused by type F Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin, including foodborne, wound, and infant botulism cases where type-specific therapy is indicated.
Equine-derived F(ab')2 immunoglobulin fragments bind specifically to type F botulinum neurotoxin, neutralizing its activity before the toxin can attach to presynaptic cholinergic nerve terminals and cause irreversible paralysis.
Equine origin carries risk of hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis; skin testing may be required. Use caution in patients with known allergies to horse proteins. Early administration provides best outcomes as antitoxin cannot reverse paralysis already established at nerve terminals.
