Treatment of confirmed or suspected botulism caused by type G neurotoxin. May also provide cross-protection against other botulinum toxin types in certain formulations. Used when patients show signs of botulism such as descending paralysis, respiratory difficulty, or cranial nerve deficits.
Equine-derived F(ab')2 immunoglobulin fragments bind specifically to botulinum neurotoxin molecules, neutralizing their activity before they can attach to nerve endings. By binding the toxin in circulation, it prevents further neurological damage while the body clears the toxin-antibody complex.
Derived from horse serum, requiring careful screening for hypersensitivity or previous equine protein exposure. Should be administered as early as possible in the disease course for maximum effectiveness. Requires intradermal or scratch testing prior to administration in patients with unknown sensitivity. Supportive care including respiratory monitoring remains essential as antitoxin does not reverse existing paralysis.
