Bremelanotide is FDA-approved for treating acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. It is used as needed before anticipated sexual activity and is not indicated for HSDD caused by medical conditions, psychiatric disorders, or relationship problems.

As a non-selective agonist of melanocortin receptors (primarily MC3 and MC4), bremelanotide activates pathways involved in sexual desire and arousal. It is not a hormone but modulates neurochemical signaling in brain regions responsible for sexual response.

Administered via subcutaneous injection in the abdomen or thigh at least 45 minutes before sexual activity. Common side effects include nausea, flushing, headache, and injection site reactions. Patients should limit use to 8 doses per month and avoid use in patients with uncontrolled hypertension or cardiovascular disease due to potential blood pressure increases.
