Sugammadex

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: September 3, 2026

Bridion (sugammadex) is a selective relaxant binding agent used to reverse neuromuscular blockade induced by specific muscle relaxants during and after surgery. It is administered intravenously and works by encapsulating the neuromuscular blocking agents rocuronium and vecuronium, allowing for faster recovery of normal muscle function compared to traditional reversal methods.

Quick summary

Bridion reverses surgical muscle relaxation by encapsulating and inactivating neuromuscular blocking agents in the bloodstream.

Routine and emergency reversal of neuromuscular blockade caused by rocuronium and vecuronium in adults undergoing surgery. It may also be used in pediatric patients for routine reversal of rocuronium-induced blockade.

Bridion is a modified gamma-cyclodextrin that selectively binds to neuromuscular blocking agents in the plasma, forming a stable complex that is then eliminated renally. This encapsulation effectively inactivates the muscle relaxant, allowing acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction to restore normal muscle function.

Administered as an intravenous injection by trained healthcare professionals. May cause allergic reactions including anaphylaxis. Not effective for reversing blockade from benzylisoquinolinium agents such as atracurium or cisatracurium. Monitoring of neuromuscular function is recommended during recovery. May interact with certain hormonal contraceptives by reducing their absorption.
