Bromazepam/Trimebutine is a combination medication pairing an anxiolytic with an antispasmodic agent. Treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and related functional gastrointestinal disorders characterized by abdominal pain, spasms, and discomfort, particularly when associated with anxiety or stress components.
Bromazepam (a benzodiazepine) acts on GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system to produce anxiolytic and muscle-relaxant effects, while Trimebutine (an antispasmodic) acts on mu-opioid receptors in the gastrointestinal tract to regulate intestinal motility and reduce smooth muscle spasms.
Due to the benzodiazepine component, this medication carries risks of dependence, sedation, and withdrawal with prolonged use. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of substance abuse, respiratory depression, or liver impairment. Alcohol and other CNS depressants should be avoided. Treatment duration should be as short as possible and not exceed 8-12 weeks.
