Treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome. May also be used for hypertension in certain cases.

Bumetanide inhibits the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter (NKCC2) in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, blocking reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and potassium. This results in increased excretion of water, sodium, chloride, and other electrolytes.

May cause electrolyte imbalances (especially low potassium), dehydration, and hearing problems with high doses. Patients with sulfonamide allergy may also be allergic to Bumex. Blood pressure and electrolyte levels should be monitored during treatment. Avoid alcohol and limit sun exposure while taking this medication.
