Buthiazide / Spironolactone
Buthiazide/Spironolactone is a combination diuretic medication used to treat fluid retention (edema) and high blood pressure. Buthiazide is a thiazide diuretic that helps the kidneys eliminate excess fluid and sodium, while spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic that blocks aldosterone to prevent potassium loss. This combination is commonly prescribed for conditions such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and certain kidney disorders.
A combination diuretic used to treat fluid retention and high blood pressure by promoting sodium excretion while conserving potassium.

This medication is used to treat conditions involving fluid retention and elevated blood pressure, including congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis with ascites, nephrotic syndrome, and essential hypertension.
Buthiazide inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, promoting water and sodium excretion. Spironolactone blocks aldosterone receptors, preventing potassium secretion and providing additional diuretic effects. Together, they provide complementary diuretic action while the spironolactone component helps offset potassium loss caused by the thiazide.
Regular monitoring of kidney function and electrolyte levels (especially potassium) is essential. This combination may cause hyperkalemia, particularly in patients with impaired kidney function. Spironolactone may cause hormonal effects such as gynecomastia or menstrual irregularities. Patients should avoid potassium supplements and NSAIDs while taking this medication unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider.
