Bydureon is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes or those with a history of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Bydureon is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It works by binding to GLP-1 receptors, which stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and promotes feelings of fullness.

Bydureon is administered as a subcutaneous injection once weekly. Common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Due to potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors observed in animal studies, it is contraindicated in patients with personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma. Patients should be monitored for signs of pancreatitis and hypoglycemia when used with other diabetes medications.
