Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

C1 Esterase Inhibitor (Human) is a replacement therapy used to treat and prevent hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks in patients with C1 inhibitor deficiency. This medication works by replenishing the deficient C1 inhibitor protein, which helps regulate bradykinin production and prevents the uncontrolled swelling episodes characteristic of the condition.

Treatment and routine prophylaxis of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults, adolescents, and children due to C1 inhibitor deficiency. Used for acute abdominal attacks, facial/throat swelling, and peripheral edema.

C1 esterase inhibitor is a naturally occurring serine protease inhibitor. It regulates the complement and contact systems by inhibiting C1 esterase, kallikrein, and factor XIIa. In HAE patients with deficient C1-INH, replacement therapy restores inhibitory control, preventing excess bradykinin production that causes vascular permeability and angioedema.

Administered by intravenous infusion. Self-administration may be taught after proper training. Hypersensitivity reactions are possible; contraindicated with known anaphylaxis to C1 inhibitor products. Product is plasma-derived; theoretical infection risk exists. Thrombotic events have been reported with high-dose regimens. Dosing varies for acute treatment versus prophylaxis.
