Cabometyx is used to treat adults with advanced renal cell carcinoma (a type of kidney cancer), hepatocellular carcinoma (a type of liver cancer) in patients who have previously received sorafenib, and locally advanced or metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer that has progressed after prior VEGFR-targeted therapy.
Cabometyx is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks multiple enzymes (including VEGFR, MET, and AXL) involved in tumor growth, cancer progression, and the formation of new blood vessels that feed tumors (angiogenesis). By inhibiting these pathways, it helps slow cancer cell growth and spread.
Cabometyx is taken orally as a tablet, typically once daily on an empty stomach. Common side effects may include fatigue, diarrhea, decreased appetite, nausea, hand-foot syndrome, and hypertension. Patients should be monitored for liver problems, bleeding, and gastrointestinal perforation. Treatment should be supervised by an oncologist experienced with cancer medications.
