Treatment of acute migraine headaches, particularly those accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or motion sensitivity. May also be used for cluster headaches in some cases.
Ergotamine causes vasoconstriction of cranial blood vessels to reverse migraine-induced dilation. Dimenhydrinate blocks histamine receptors and reduces activity in the vomiting center of the brain. Caffeine improves ergotamine absorption and may provide additional analgesic effects.
Should not be used by patients with cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or during pregnancy. Risk of medication-overuse headaches with frequent use. Caffeine content may cause sleep disturbances or anxiety in some patients. Take at first sign of migraine for best results.
