Used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiency, manage osteoporosis, osteomalacia (softening of bones), hypocalcemia, and rickets. Often prescribed for individuals with limited sun exposure, poor dietary intake, or malabsorption issues.
Calcium carbonate provides elemental calcium necessary for bone structure, nerve function, and muscle contraction. Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2) is converted to its active form in the body, enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium and helping maintain healthy calcium and phosphate levels for proper bone mineralization.
Should be taken with food for optimal calcium absorption. Separate doses by at least 2 hours from antibiotics like tetracyclines or fluoroquinolones. Avoid use in hypercalcemia, kidney disease, or vitamin D toxicity. Monitor for symptoms of excess calcium including constipation, nausea, or confusion. Common side effects include gas, bloating, or constipation.
