Treats occasional heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, bloating, and gas. May also be used as a calcium supplement in some formulations.
Calcium carbonate acts as a fast-acting acid neutralizer, converting excess stomach acid into water and carbon dioxide. Magnesium hydroxide works similarly but more slowly, and also draws water into the intestines to promote bowel movements, counteracting the constipating effects of calcium carbonate.
Should not be taken within 2 hours of other medications as it can interfere with absorption. Those with kidney disease, hypercalcemia, or on dairy-rich diets should consult a doctor before use. Avoid prolonged daily use without medical supervision.
