Treatment and prevention of hypocalcemia (low blood calcium), calcium supplementation when oral intake is not possible, cardiac arrest management as an adjunct therapy, calcium channel blocker or beta-blocker toxicity, and hypermagnesemia. Also used during blood transfusions involving citrate anticoagulants.
Provides bioavailable calcium ions that replace deficient levels in the bloodstream and bodily tissues. Calcium is essential for proper nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction (including cardiac muscle), blood coagulation, and maintaining structural integrity of bones and teeth.
Must be administered intravenously slowly to prevent severe hypotension, bradycardia, or cardiac arrest. Extravasation can cause significant tissue irritation and necrosis. Use caution in patients taking digoxin, as calcium can increase digitalis toxicity risk. Monitor serum calcium levels during therapy. Not for subcutaneous or intramuscular administration.
