Calcium Polystyrene Sulfonate Product / Methylcellulose

Published: July 27, 2026Updated: August 28, 2026

Calcium Polystyrene Sulfonate with Methylcellulose is a combination medication used to treat hyperkalemia (elevated blood potassium levels). The calcium polystyrene sulfonate component binds to potassium in the intestines, while methylcellulose adds bulk and promotes regular bowel movements to prevent constipation, a common side effect of the resin. This medication is typically prescribed for patients with chronic kidney disease or other conditions causing impaired potassium excretion.

Quick summary

A combination medication that lowers high blood potassium levels while preventing constipation associated with potassium-binding resins.

Treatment and prevention of hyperkalemia (elevated blood potassium), particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease on dialysis, or conditions causing impaired potassium excretion. May also be used in situations where ongoing potassium management is needed.

Calcium polystyrene sulfonate is a cation exchange resin that releases calcium ions in exchange for potassium and ammonium ions in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing excess potassium to be excreted in feces. Methylcellulose, a bulk-forming agent, adds soluble fiber to the stool, promoting bowel regularity and preventing the constipation commonly caused by the resin.

May cause constipation, electrolyte disturbances (low calcium or high potassium in some cases), or gastrointestinal discomfort. Take as directed with meals and adequate fluids. Drug interactions are common as the resin can bind many oral medications; separate dosing by several hours. Not recommended for acute, severe hyperkalemia requiring emergency intervention. Monitor electrolyte levels regularly during treatment.
